Portrait of William H Smith

WILLIAM H. SMITH – A Great Lakes Legend (and co-founder of Henry H. Smith Company)

In the early 20th century, as Detroit’s maritime industry thrived along the Great Lakes, two brothers launched a venture that would become a cornerstone of the region’s nautical heritage. On May 15, 1900, Henry H. Smith and William H. Smith founded Henry H. Smith and Company at
the corner of East Jefferson and Brush streets in downtown Detroit (now the site of the Renaissance Center). What started as a modest marine supply and repair shop quickly grew.
By 1910, it had become the largest marine supplier in the Midwest, driven by William H. Smith’s vision, tenacity, and hands-on leadership during a time of rapid industrial expansion.
William played a pivotal role in the company’s early success. As Detroit evolved into the Motor City, the business met surging demand for reliable marine equipment — specializing
in propellers, shafts, and hardware for the growing fleet of Great Lakes vessels. William’s reputation for ingenuity and reliability endures in maritime circles. His working relationship with Henry Ford and famous customers like Bing Crosby are legendary.

In the 1970s, the business relocated to Algonac, Michigan, expanding its reach to marinas across Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Ontario, Canada. This move introduced regular weekly deliveries and modernized operations while maintaining strong family involvement. Today, fourth-generation Smith family members carry on the legacy. The company is renowned for its National
Marine Propulsion Association (NMPA) certification, expert welding, propeller repair services (from recreational to commercial), and an unwavering commitment to quality — principles rooted in William’s foundational approach. William H. Smith’s story transcends mere
business history; it embodies resilience in America’s industrial heartland. From
steamships to modern yachts, his dedication helped ensure safe voyages for countless mariners.
The Henry H. Smith Company remains a testament to that enduring spirit: proof that a well-crafted propeller can drive not only vessels, but generations of success.
